ENTREVISTA UNIVERSAL

ENGLISH INTERVIEW BELOW

¡Vaya raibh mile maith agat! Corr Mhóna Abú !!!!

UNIVERSAL INTERVIEW

Welcome to the universal interview, an interview looking for a common point among the artists we are interviewing, touching the psychology and philosophy of each member, each detail that made possible your band. This is not a normal interview, there’s much more in here.

  1. It’s always a pleasure to meet and support bands like yours, so please, in the name of Rock, please present yourselves. (Who’s answering this interview)

Hi everyone, I’m Robert F., drummer for Corr Mhóna. We are from West Cork, Ireland. We have been going since 2009, when two sets of brothers (the Farrows and the Quinns) decided to get together and form a band after years of playing and going to gigs. We like to combine all our skills and influences in the band, so we write riffs and sing in different styles depending on the mood of the song. Our lyrics are entirely in the Irish language (Gaeilge).

  1. In these questions I encourage you to present your album (or upcoming album) and guide us to the concept in order to create such a piece of art, how did you do it and what are you expecting of it?

Our latest album is entitled ‘Abhainn’ which is the word ‘river’ as Gaeilge, in the Irish language. The album as a whole has one overarching concept and narrative journey, that of the Irish river. We had some music already written when we came up with the idea and then began combining the songs into one musical flow. As the album represents the river’s life from source to sea, we placed each song where it would be relevant within that journey (e.g., heavier and faster music to represent rapids and falls). Each track has its own character from its place in the flow, as well as representing a particular Irish river and referencing the story and mythology of that river in the lyrics. We are hoping that this album will reach a much broader audience than our earlier releases and of course that people enjoy it!!!

  1. I always ask about the new album you are presenting but I would like to stay away from the script and ask you the person of the band you would choose to go to a lonely island with.

Haha! I would probably find an island to live on with bass player Steve Q., he’s a great guy to have in a tricky situation!

  1. What makes your proposal special, different from the others and unique?

I think the linear aspect of the river from its conception, through raging torrent, onwards to end of life, and merging with the sea is a novel approach to an album. It allowed us to marry our musical style, which too is a blend of many genres, to a concept that allows many different musical expressions.

  1. A good opus always includes interesting topics. Please let us know more about the lyrical content of your album.

We have a variety of moods and styles on the album, with choral sections, instrumentals, and a mixture of vocals, just like our previous album ‘Dair’. As I mentioned our lyrics are entirely in the Irish language (Gaeilge) and we write about natural and environmental themes, reflecting our current reality, heritage, and mythology. This particular opus has an extra dimension to each track, each of which is represented by a river god from Irish mythology. This allowed us to take character attributes from each river and blend these traits into lyrics and music alike.

  1. Analogical or digital? Walkman…(my earliest medium!)
  1. Album covers have always something to say and define genres… Let us know the meaning behind your album covers and the designers who created it.

The main piece at the centre of the cover was drawn by Mairéad Mc Guinness of @maireadmcguinnessart . She is a fantastically gifted artist from Drogheda in Ireland, and we asked her to help with the new album as we thought her art would be a great match for our music; it has that combination of light and dark within it. She created several pieces for us, each one inspired by one of the rivers on the album. We finally chose Suláin for the cover and then Martin F. (guitarist and vocalist) created a variety of amazing backdrops for the album cover and booklet.

  1. Stage presence has been always important in the Rock genre, is this an important point for you and how much do you care of it?

It has been so long since we have had an opportunity to gig because of Covid -19, but our stage presence is something we always work on. Generally we try to let the music speak for itself but crowd interaction is important for any band.

  1. Until which point can yourselves be driven by madness?

Living on a dessert island with Steve Q.

  1. It’s common knowledge that in life you need to know failure in order to succeed. What do you think about it?

Of course this rings true for many bands, for Corr Mhóna we will always be playing the metal of death. Failures for us may have been naïve approaches to early recordings, but without this knowledge we would not have learned what was necessary to produce ‘Abhainn’.

  1. It’s clear that you are marked by a concrete music genre, but what did you see in it to dedicate your life to it?

Being able to play music that competes with all the bands we listened to growing up is a special feeling. Also the friendships and bonds we have formed over the years with likeminded musicians and fans of metal music.

  1.  What would you say to your past “I” if you could speak to yourselves?

Spend money on decent instruments, practice with them always, and care for them.

  1. … If you would have to to dedicate your talent to their music genre, which one would you choose?

Tough question!… as musicians we all have many influences from death, trash, prog, doom and folk influences. I suppose the uniting theme would be 90’s metal in general.

  1.  What is the philosophy that guides you as human beings, not so human and make you be the way you are?

If someone goes in the moshpit, make sure they get up…then keep moshing!

  1.  Is there a chance for revolution as humanity or is it too late?

It has already begun.

  1. From all your setlist, Which is the song that best define you as a band and which one can’t be out of the setlist?

For me personally ‘An Slua Sídhe’ from our first album. Showcases the styles we come to represent, lyrically explores Irish folklore with a look to comparing the story to modern Irish problems.

  1.  What are the normal things in life that give sense to it for you?

Wine, women, food and music.

  1.  How do you work your opus from scratch and how is the mixing and mastering process?

We work quite collaboratively as a band, riffs and melodies coming from both guitarist (Martin F. and Paul Q.) and bassist Steve Q. With respect to drums it can vary from taking inspiration from other bands, seeing what feels right in the moment or knowing what is coming next in the arrangement. We recorded at Trackmix recording studios Dublin, @trackmix_studio, with Michael Richards. Michael got a really full and powerful sound for us, something we really yearned from earlier recordings

  1. Van Halen always asked for a bowl of M&M in their backstage with no brown colour. So, what is the thing that can’t be missed in your backstage?

Buckfast Tonic Wine…. lifeblood of Corr Mhóna.

  1.  Society is completely polarized in political matters, how is this affecting your day after day?

We play music with reference to modern life on a broader global and environmental scale, the problems that are prevalent and how the compare to Irish mythology and to our own experiences.

  1.  What do you think is the biggest mistake you have ever made in your musical career and would never do again?

I had a chance to play professional percussion in the Bandon Philharmonic Orchestra and passed it up.

  1.  Sure you have a special show you carefully remember, please tell us about it.

We played ‘The Siege of Limerick’ a local 2-day festival, crowd were excellent, no missed notes…perfect.

  1. A book or a comic that is very significant for you.

The Illiad – Homer

  1. What its the album of your life?

The Odyssey – Symphony X

  1.  Tell us about a music festival that touched your soul.

‘HellFest”, France….2010

  1. A dream to pursue?

Owning a Tama Star bubinga drumkit

  1. A song that gives you chills

Stretched at Your Grave – Voice Squad

  1. Beer or Whiskey?

Whiskey

  1.  PlayStation or X-Box?

PlayStation

  1. A sin to fulfill?

There’s so many….maybe brother docking?

  1. Do you think electric sheep dream about robots?

Ask Harrison Ford

  1.  Your favourite instrument apart from the standards?

Oboe

  1. LP, Cassete or CD?? In words of the Ghostbusters, choose and die.

Cassette

  1. This question is a must for me: I want you to confess a story from your life on the road that can be told and another one that can’t be told. Don’t run away from this question …

Travelled from our hometown to London to play a small folk metal festival. The festival itself was amazing but our predicted 8 hour journey took 24 hours on a shitty ferry and bus. Exhausted, hungover and drunk  at the same time we travelled home the same route only to play another gig the next night……gotta love touring. A story that cant be told involves blankets, bass players and mobile homes…but I’ve already said too much.

  1.  What makes you angry in the music scene and what would you change?

Lack of venues that are open to accommodating heavy metal bands in general. There is a stigma associated with ‘metallars’ which is seriously unwarranted. The music may be extreme but I have found almost exclusively that the crowd is just there for a good time, to enjoy the music and resect each other.

  1.  How do you do to survive and self-finance yourselves as a band?

We all work jobs of course and with the advent of Spotify and other streaming services finance from album sales is relatively low. We supplement with sales from t shirts and other merch. I think fans will always want to support bands they like and I would rather that support through turning up for gigs and online shares/likes as opposed to dirty money. We are not in this for the money.

  1. What are your expectations for the future, something planned when the current situation is over?

Hopefully when the planet returns to normal after Covid-19 we can get some gigs lined up to tour the album. The feedback from interviews and all the promo work has gone really well so I know we are all itching to play it live for al you fans out there.

  1. Finishing this non conventional interview, when the curtain falls, please let us know your feelings when the show is over.

Elation! We usually have a small bit of time to ourselves to reflect on our performance, warm down routine and some healthy food…. then head to the bar!

  1. Here we finish the universal interview in this new chapter and leave you some space to write something for your fans.

space to write at your fans words for the readers and fans with this blank page.

Thanks a million for having us on for this interview! It is great to finally release Abhainn and to get feedback and contact with people in different countries from it, such as yourselves. We look forward to being able to get back out there on stage and play these songs for people around the world – see you at a gig somewhere in the future. Until then, take care and keep it metal! Go raibh mile maith agat! Corr Mhóna Abú!!!!
